Finding the right tennis competition for your child (starter guide)

In this video I will be going over when you know your child is ready for their first tennis tournament or competition. How to book them on the correct one. Best ways for you to support them before, during and after the event. 00:00 Finding the right tennis competition for your child (starter guide) 00:35 When is my child ready? - at this point they should be really enjoying the game, playing on a regular basis, and have had time to develop their skills. Able to understand the scoring system and can serve the ball to the start points. If in doubt please speak to your local tennis coach. 01:57 Which tournament is right for my child? - tournament grading system 03:08 How to book your child on - your child will need an account. Need help creating an account, check out my video on the world tennis number and the LTAs advantage member programme here. (https://youtu.be/OH92i5JF7Zg) 05:22 Best way for you to support before the event - ask them if they would like to play tennis against a family member/ mention to their coach they have a competition soon/ organise a friendly competitive match against a friend so they are more familiar with playing matches. Give them the responsibility to organise their own stuff (depend on age of child, but you will be surprised) - support with a basic list that they can tick off. 07:30 Best way for you to support during the event - give extra time so you are able to arrive at the venue early (this helps to relax your child and so they get more familiar with the environment)/ offer support and let them know where you will be/ give them space to make new friends and interact with others. Remember to show support and encouragement but let them work things out for themselves. Every child is different so make sure to ask if they want you to watch and how close. Remember your own body language and emotions when watching - not easy, watching is more difficult than playing. 09:44 Best way for you to support after the event - tell them how proud you are and how much you enjoyed watching them. Try and keep from offering feedback unless they ask for it. Talk a normal amount in the car on the way home, no talking and your child will think they have done something wrong, lots of talking and it will be frustrating and intrusive for the child. Top 3 Drills For Two Handed Backhand In Tennis - Transform Your Tennis Backhand

Top 3 Drills For Two Handed Backhand In Tennis - Transform Your Tennis Backhand

Top 3 Drills For Two-Handed Backhand In Tennis - Transform Your Backhand. For the vast majority of tennis players, the backhand is their weakness. The two-handed backhand in tennis can be a very powerful and consistent shot, players like Novak Djokovic, Andre Agassi, David Nalbandian, and Marat Safin all have amazing backhands, perhaps the best of all time. These players are capable of producing heavy topspin or hitting a flatter backhand that takes time away from opponents. A few of the most important elements of a good two-handed backhand in tennis include: - Using the top hand to generate topspin - Creating a low to high swing when going for topspin - Using the major muscle groups to generate power, this includes the legs and bodyweight transfer, the coil and uncoil of the trunk muscles - Reaching a good power position on the backhand Which hand should dominate the two-handed backhand? For the vast majority of two-handed backhands in tennis, the top hand, your left hand if you are a right-handed player, should be the boss. Normally it should be 60% top hand, 40% bottom hand. That may change when producing more topspin or going for a short crosscourt angle. In those cases, the top hand may be leading by 70% or 80%. When hitting a flatter backhand, the bottom hand can take more of a lead, often it will be 50-50 or 60-40 for the bottom hand. This is because, on those shots, you'll be extending out towards the target much more and hitting through the contact zone with a more linear swing. To transform your own two-handed backhand, try out these three drills. Drill One Topspin vs flat - to isolate and work on each hand separately, firstly start off hitting shots with your top hand only. Keep the same grip you normally use on the back and use the open stance to work the left side of your body, assuming you're right-handed. Here you will be focused on brushing up the back of the ball producing topspin. Then alternate between using your top hand and the bottom hand. With the top hand, keep working on the brushing motion and with the bottom hand, focus more on extending out, through the contact point. Finally, hit one shot with the top hand only, then the bottom hand only, then both hands. Drill Two Power production - start in the power position, focus on having the racket head higher than the grip level, creating leverage in the arms and racket head. Leverage is basically force over the ball. Lift your front foot off the ground and load up on the back leg. As your coach or partner drop feeds the ball, you then step forward and transfer the body weight into the shot. Focus on opening up the body and pivoting around the front foot. Drill Three Rotational Power - In this drill, you'll be using a medicine ball or a football (soccer ball). Focus on turning the shoulders and storing energy in the trunk muscles, especially the side abdominals. As you throw the ball, focus on uncoiling and really go for it. Modern Tennis Forehand - 5 Drills You Must Do

Modern Tennis Forehand - 5 Drills You Must Do

Modern Tennis Forehand - 5 Drills You Must Do Time to learn the modern tennis forehand drills you must do to fully master the shot. Each unique drill designed to improve a fundamental part of the stroke to give you the ability to hit your forehands with ease. The forehand has evolved throughout the years due to a number of factors. Mainly the court surfaces have become slower and higher bouncing so the ability to generate spin has become vital to any players chances of success. The racquets have become more powerful and strings more responsive. With the need for spin came the grip change: a. Continental (chopper/hammer) grip - the original grip for tennis used by players like Rod Laver and great for low bouncing balls on surfaces like grass. The heel pad of the palm rests on bevel 1 and 2. We now use this grips for serves, slices and volleys. b. Eastern grip - allows for some topspin and gives the ability to hit flat hard shots, it also allows for a lot of feel on the strokes. This grip was made famous by Bjorn Borg and used by players like Sampras and Federer who sometimes adjusts it more towards bevel 4 and closer to Semi-Western. c. Semi-Western - the most used grip on the pro circuit allowing for great spin generation and power while the ability to maintain a high arc trajectory of a shot making the ball bounce higher off the court creating difficulties for the opponent. The ability to create the perfect amount of spin means players can accelerate through their shots more giving them more powerful strokes which dip before the baseline. Famously used by Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal who edges closer towards the western grip. d. Western grip - used by players like Jack Sock, Kyle Edmund, Karen Khachanov and Nick Kyrgios. Gives a player a tremendous amount of topspin and the ability to deal with high balls while giving a player power of they use the wrist lag and snap correctly. The technique had to adapt too as it was no longer possible to simply take the racquet back and forth in a linear path, the swing became more compact and the wrist lag came into effect. We broke the modern forehand down into 5 fundamental drills that you should master in this tennis lesson. 1. The path of the racquet - working on getting the racquet under the ball and moving upwards through the shot and wrist rotation to create the maximum amount of top-spin. 2. The path (trajectory) of your shot - working on a higher net clearance which is required to accommodate the spin created to ensure that the balls are landing deep and it is tough for the opponent to attack. 3. The swing - working on the swing to be more compact and not breaking the line of your body with references to both ATP and WTA swings. 4. Hit phase - working on getting a smooth loop on your swing and lagging your wrist through the hit phase of the shot. 5. Turn & Space - making sure your shoulders are turned and you are hitting the ball far enough away from you to allow the racquet to accelerate. Video Timeline: 00:00 Intro 00:12 - How to get more topspin (drill one) 2:20 - The ball path (drill two) 3:53 - The modern swing (drill three) 6:13 - How to create a good loop (drill four) 7:48 - Finding the perfect contact point (drill five) Who has tried these with their coach?
