The final kept the audience on the edge of their seats as both pairs had several championship points before Graham and Anthea eventually triumphed 15-13 in the deciding tie-break. I'm really pleased to say that we have recruited a great new Head Coach, Mihaly Bukur who you will all hopefully meet within the next few weeks. He is an excellent coach who is Romanian & has been coaching in Portugal for the last 8 years. We are also pleased to say that we have been awarded a substantial coaching grant by Small Grant Sport England which will help Mihaly further develop our coaching programme. This includes money to support our performance players, buy equipment, coach adult beginners & over 55s, school links & wheelchair tennis. We were delighted to welcome June Barrett, Adrian, Fiona, Matt, Sophie & Poppy to a special lunch ahead of the Barrett Trophy this Sunday. Both Dennis & Jim then made excellent speeches about John's huge contribution to Riverside Tennis Club before June unveiled a bench with a plaque in memory of John. We all tucked into a superb lunch arranged by Pam before 12 couples competed for this year's trophy. The tournament went really well - twelve pairs competing on a beautiful sunny afternoon. The final was a close contest with Bill H and Carolyn eventually beating Steve and Kristie 6-4. Many thanks to the Tournament Committee for arranging the competition and the Social Committee for organising such a fitting tribute to John. |

Please also note that Saturday afternoon club play on Saturday 8 & Saturday 15 August will change to 11am - 2pm as the two home Apsley matches will be using all the courts at 2pm. |

Our mini-red and mini-orange tournaments went very well on Sunday morning. After some great tennis the people who have won through to finals day are: James & Edward in boys 8 & Under competition, Charlie & Josh in the boys 6 & under event and Henry and Miles will battle it out for the mini-orange title. |

Well done to the Under 18 NCL team who beat Chiseldon 8-4 - including two very tight tie-break wins from Luke; 10-8 in his singles and 13-11 in his doubles with Alex Coombes! Alex and Charlie also won their singles, with Tom & Charlie just losing out 12-14 in their doubles' deciding tie-break. |

We are sad to say that John Barrett passed away at home on Friday 26 June after a long illness. He was at home and was surrounded by his loving family.
John was lifelong member and friend of Riverside and played a large part in the club's success. He held numerous positions on the Committee including Mens' Captain (for 21 years!) and Treasurer; he also took the lead in running all the club tournaments for many years and introduced the very popular floodlight league which has now become such an integral part of our winter programme.
John also played a huge role in setting up and running the Sarum League which has provided local competition for many clubs. John was a qualified referee and loved his annual job as a line-judge at Wimbledon.
He will be greatly missed at the club and by all his family and many friends.
His funeral will take place on Tuesday 7 July at 2.30pm at the church in Winterbourne Earls. |

The Joint Riverside/Victoria Park Junior Grade 4 Tournament went well this week with quite a lot of local success! The boys 10 & Under competition was good for Riverside with Jamie winning & Sam H reaching the semi-final, Michael reached the final of the Boys 14 & Under event with Will beating Harry in the final of the plate. Will & Michael lost in the final of the Boys 14 & Under & Luke & Charlie were runners-up in the Boys 18 & Under competition.

Our wheelchair open day went really well on Sunday afternoon. Louise Hunt, who is currently 3rd in the junior world rankings, came along to help with her coach, Ali Ward. Thanks to everyone who helped make this a great day - Andy Howson who worked tirelessly to ensure as many people as possible heard about the opportunity, Philippa who produced the tea & Ant who organised some publicity with the Journal. Well done to the juniors who played in the Pewsey Tournament. Jamie made the final of the Under 10 competition losing 11-9 in a deciding tie-break, Michael did very well to reach the semi-finals of both the Under 14 & Under 16 singles and teamed up with James to reach the final of the Under 14 doubles. Sam Harris reached the semi-final of the Under 10 competition where he lost against Jamie. |

The Chairman's Cup was played in beautiful sunshine on Easter Monday and was followed up with a great tea & the Wimbledon Ticket Draw. 24 people participated in the tournament with Steve & Carolyn beating Graham & Liz 6-3 in the final. Thanks very much to Guy for organising the tennis & for Philippa for arranging a brilliant tea! |
